Established in 2011 the salon itself is a beautiful Listed Building spanning over two floors, steeped in history dating back to 1845.  On the ground floor there is a modern, sleek yet bustling atmosphere. However the ambience on the first floor is shabby chic antique with a tranquil feel and a sumptuous massage backwash chair.
The Ruby Hair Room is an award winning, small family-run boutique style salon which prides itself on our welcoming, yet high-end atmosphere, providing a friendly and professional service ranging from colour expertise and cutting skills to blow drying brilliance and quality hair extensions for which we have become renowned and a highly respected salon.  We have consistently been awarded the GOLD SALON AWARD every year since 2012 for Great Lengths.

The Manager, 42b High Street, Rayleigh, Essex

Before 42b High Street Rayleigh became 'The Ruby Hair Room' this listed building was home to clothing store, a Singer Sewing machine shop and even a grocers. The building itself has been a feature of Rayleigh High street for nearly 150 years. The wooden beams holding the building together originally came from a retired ship and evidence of the unique origins and age of the building are featured  into the  character of the ‘The Ruby Hair Room’. 42b High Street Rayleigh is a part of Rayleigh’s historical conservation program.

In the first image the building can just be seen at the centre of the image. This is oldest recorded photograph of the building.
But it wasn’t always seen as a historical landmark. In the latter part of the 1970’s it was the centre of much controversy when an application was made to demolish it. The Council of the day voted 20 to 1 to allow the application but the County Council and various amenity organisations including the Civic Society wanted to see it restored. Luckily with the aid of a grant it was restored in 1971/72. It had a rather unusual roof truss but its main attraction was its appearance and prominent position in the Town Centre.

The photo below was taken in the late 1950’s shows the building as ‘Manns Grocers’. Notice the minor structural differences to today.

The decision to restore this building was probably the turning point in the fight to retain old buildings in the High Street. Up to this time the policy had been to demolish the old and develop the sites with box-like buildings which were the vogue in the 1960's and 70's. To actually set about restoring an old building was a long overdue change in policy and a very welcome one.
A Town Map is on the wall of Mann’s facing the Millennium Clock (which was erected in 1999 and has a time capsule beneath it scheduled to be opened in the year 2050).

42b High Street Rayleigh features in most of the towns historical photos from the past 100 years.
